In response to mounting criticism over the inappropriate and flirtatious behavior of its AI chatbots, Meta has announced new parental control features aimed at strengthening teen safety across its social media platforms. The tech giant revealed on Friday that it will soon allow parents to block their teenagers’ private conversations with AI characters – a move designed to make Instagram and other Meta platforms safer for younger users.

This announcement follows Meta’s earlier decision to apply the PG-13 movie rating system to all AI experiences for teenagers, ensuring that the content and conversations remain appropriate for younger audiences. According to a detailed blog post by Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri and Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, the new AI supervision tools will first roll out in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia early next year. The update will give parents the ability to block certain AI chatbot personalities, while still allowing teens to use Meta’s main AI Assistant under age-appropriate settings.

Even if parents decide to restrict their teenagers’ one-on-one chats with AI characters, Meta’s core AI assistant will remain active with built-in age-appropriate defaults. The company emphasized that these controls build on existing protections for teen accounts, including automatic privacy settings and behavioral signals that detect when a user may be underage – even if they enter a false birth date.
